WHY DO YOU USE COCONUT-APRICOT WAX?

After many months of testing different types of waxes, we landed on the one that worked the best for us: NATURAL, NON-TOXIC, AND SUSTAINABLE, COCONUT-APRICOT WAX!

Made of a luxurious blend of creamy coconut and apricot waxes, with a tiny bit of highly refined food-grade paraffin wax, it is one of the slowest-burning waxes out there, meaning you'll be enjoying your LUHO candle for a long time! It is a clean-burning wax, that produces no harmful chemicals when lit up and ensures an even candle burn with less maintenance. Unlike other natural waxes that often have pitted tops, when coconut-apricot wax solidifies, you get a beautiful smooth top. Additionally, it has an excellent scent throw, doesn't produce a lot of soot like other waxes and performs more consistently with natural wood wicks providing a stronger, more reliable burn/flame than 100% soy wax.

It was important for us to use eco-friendly ingredients in our luxury candles to better the planet and as a biodegradable and renewable resource, coconut-apricot wax was the one for us!

We also chose this premium wax because we wanted to stand out from all the 100% soy and coconut-soy wax candles, showing folks a better, luxurious alternative

P.S. no shade buuuuut when you buy coconut-soy wax candle, its hard to determine what it's blend ratio is, for instance, you could have a candle with 1:3 or 2:3 coconut-soy composition - you never really know! And with beeswax, we want to support bees and beekeepers, but using beeswax is not vegan.

BUT I THOUGHT SOY WAX WAS ECO-FRIENDLY?

Although soy wax is also a natural, non-toxic, and vegan wax, the demand for it has sharply risen over the past few years. This has lead to a dangerous amount of deforestation in most areas where it’s grown. Large green areas and animal habitats are destroyed to establish new soy fields. At LUHO we felt the need to look for other alternatives.

We do not claim to be experts on everything about the wax industry, but a quick Google search on the production of soy wax will give you more insight on its cost on the environment.

All of the 100% soy waxes we tested with (including coconut-soy wax blends) consistently left us disappointed. They did not hold or throw fragrances well and gave us ugly pitted and/or frosted tops (white crystalline layer on the surface of the wax) when they solidified.

COULDN'T I JUST GET A CHEAPER CANDLE AT *INSERT BIG BOX COMPANY HERE*?

Sure, you could. Especially with the cost of living going up, we understand the attraction to purchase cheaper goods!

But after starting our candlemaking journey we realized that those cheap prices come at a cost.

Without going all environmentalist on you, let's talk about the wax most commonly used in those candles: PARAFFIN WAX

Paraffin wax is cheap and does give THE BEST scent throw of any wax. Natural waxes, like the one we use will never give the same scent throw result.

But, paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum (a non-renewable resource) from the oil industry, and when burned, it’s been said that this wax can release carcinogenic chemicals into the air that are hazardous to our health. So we’ve chosen not to use it as our wax.

Of course, we are not experts on everything about the wax industry and encourage you to do your own research. In fact, there has been some research saying paraffin wax is not bad at all, I mean it's still being used by these bigger companies!

At the end of the day though, by supporting local small businesses, you are supporting your local community, reducing your carbon footprint, and are keeping money in the local economy. So thank you very much for considering to purchase a candle from us, it is truly appreciated! :)

WHY DO YOU USE WOOD WICKS? ARE THEY BETTER THAN COTTON WICKS?

Both types of wicks are good, so it really just comes down to personal preference!

We decided to go with wood wicks for our LUHO tins and jars because we loved the crackling effect when it burns. It sounds like you're sitting around a campfire or near a wood fireplace! It's a pretty relaxing sound.

We also liked the look of them because they create a unique, horizontal teardrop shaped flame for some luxurious ambiance.

As well, the type of wood wick we use works well with the type of wax and fragrance oils in our candles.

They are natural, eco-friendly, sustainably and ethically sourced (FSC certified), non-toxic and handcrafted in the USA.

ARE LUHO CANDLES SCENTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS?

Short answer: no.

Essential oils are great for diffusers, but in wax, their healing properties are burned away. Aromatherapy is fine for humans, but some essential oils are toxic to pets, so we didn't want to potentially cause harm to your furry friend(s).

Instead, we use high quality fragrance oils that are are extremely rich, complex, and longer-lasting. They are paraben-free and phthalate-free which makes them safer for you and the environment.

HOW FRAGRANT ARE LUHO CANDLES?

We use natural coconut-apricot wax, which means LUHO candles do not offer the same hot throw as a paraffin or palm wax produced candle. But, the advantage to this is that our candles are not overwhelming and can be used each day.

Scent throw is used to describe how the candle smells while the wax is solid (cold throw) and how much aroma is given off after it has been lit (hot throw).

In all of our product descriptions, you will find a "Candle Size Guide" that will help you decide which candle size will best suit your space.

If you plan on using a LUHO candle in a larger space or a room with a high ceiling, we do recommend burning two or more of our standard 8oz / 227g candles for peak optimal throw. p

Please note: open windows, fans, etc. might affect the candles scent and how much of the area it will fill.

MY CANDLE HAS SOME SLIGHT APPEARANCE IMPERFECTIONS. CAN I RETURN OR EXCHANGE IT?

All LUHO candles are individually handpoured, which may result in some wax level differences between candles and some slighty off-centered wicks. We also print and label all of our candles by hand which may result in some slightly crooked labels. We try our best to make sure your product is free of any appearance imperfections. But please remember that each candle was lovingly made by hand and any small imperfections can be typical of handmade goods.

We don't claim to be perfect and believe that each LUHO candle is unique! ♥

However, we know everyone has different standards, so if you still would like to return or exchange your candle because of small defects in the appearance of the candle, please refer to our return and exchange policy HERE.

CANDLE HOW TO'S

HOW DO I SAFELY BURN & CARE FOR MY CANDLE?

For your first burn, please keep your LUHO candle lit for at least two hours before extinguishing. This will allow the wax melt pool to reach the edges of the tin or glass.

Please note: For coconut-apricot wax it is not necessary to have a full melt pool, but if you can, try to reach a full melt pool every time you light your candle. This will allow your candle to burn evenly and prevent possible ‘tunneling.’

Candle care and safety is very important to avoid any accidents, injuries/burns, and fires. Please adhere to these rules for all candles, including ours:

- Before lighting your candle, trim your wood wick to 1/8 inch (3 mm) before each burn to ensure your wood wick catches the flame properly.

- Always burn your candle in a well-ventilated room and within sight. Never leave your burning candle unattended.

- Always burn your candle on heat-resistant surfaces to avoid damages to countertop surfaces.

- Do not burn your candle for longer than 3-4 hours at a time and stop using your candle when 1/4-1/2 inch (6-12 mm) of unmelted wax remains.

- Keep burning candles away from flammable materials, children and pets.

- Do not light your candle on or near
any objects that can catch fire, and do not place on or near other heat sources.

- Do not place your candle in a draft filled area such as a hallway, near a window or by a fireplace.

- Never touch a burning candle or move a candle while the wax is pooled. Allow the container to cool completely before moving the candle.

- Ensure that your candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the candle unattended.

- Do not allow any dust, debris, wick trimmings, or any other materials collect in the wax by keeping your lid on when not in use and removing all wick trimmings from the container.

Every LUHO purchase/order will include a candle care safety card, but if you have any questions or you're not sure about something, email us at luhocandleco@gmail.com

HOW DO I LIGHT AND MAINTAIN A WOOD WICK PROPERLY?

Wood wicks are more delicate than traditional cotton wicks and can take more care and patience to maintain. But trust us, it's so worth it!

Both on the first burn and every new burn, trim your wood wick to 1/8 inch (3 mm). The shorter height allows the wax to capillary up the wick to feed the flame properly.

You can trim your wood wick by breaking off the black bits of the wick with your fingernails, small scissors, a wick trimmer, or even nail clippers!

Tip: The best way to light your wood wick is to use either a match or a utility lighter (lighters with longer necks like a BBQ lighter).

HELP MY CANDLE IS TUNNELLING!

For all candles, it is necessary to let the candle wax fully pool to the edge of the container the first time you burn the candle. Candles have a “wax memory” and if you blow out a candle too soon after you light it, it can cause the candle to have a ‘bad’ memory. This means the candle will remember where the wax pooled the first time it burned.

In cases where the wax only pooled halfway to the edge of the jar, the candle will tunnel. Candle tunneling is when a candle burns down the center, leaving a rim / edge of hard wax on the edges of the tin / jar. This leftover wax means your candle won’t achieve it’s maximum burn-time and the wick will become more and more difficult to light and will eventually be drowned by melting wax.

Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to help your candle burn evenly and efficiently, leaving as little residual wax as possible. Our favourite method is using foil. The aim of the foil method is to increase the heat trapped at the top of the candle, hopefully enabling the stubborn hard wax left up the sides to melt.

Step one: poke a hole in a piece of aluminium foil and place it around the top of the lit candle. This allows the heat to stay in and melt the rim of hard wax on the sides.

Step two: leave your candle like this for 1-2 hours. Keep the candle within sight at all times. Check every half hour, and eventually you’ll have a good even wax pool and a re-set candle. Please be careful when removing the foil, it will be hot!

Step three: if there’s too much liquid wax that is now drowning the wick, use a tissue paper to soak up the excess (when candle is unlit) and level out the wax!

Tip: Follow our Instagram and Tik Tok accounts for how-to videos!

WHEN SHOULD I STOP USING MY LUHO CANDLE?

It's time for a new LUHO candle when there is about 1/4-1/2 inch (6-12mm) of unmelted wax remaining.

Do not burn your candle when the wax reaches this level as it is no longer safe to burn properly.

Please note: we recommend burning your candle within 6 months of date of purchase for best results.

SUSTAINABILITY

HOW ARE YOU ECO-FRIENDLY?

In our candles, we use renewable coconut-apricot wax, FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified wood wicks (made of post-consumer waste), 100% recyclable containers, stickers/labels, and care cards.

Our shipping boxes are made of recycled content and is recyclable as well! Additionally, we use recyclable tissue paper, water-activated tape, and packing peanuts that are entirely plant-based and made of organic starch. These FDA compliant packing peanuts decompose in water in minutes!

We encourage you to reuse what you can, and recycle what you can’t. We are constantly working to find ways to improve and reduce ourenvironmental impact, so if you have suggestions, feel free to let us know! :)

CAN I REUSE THE CONTAINER MY CANDLE CAME IN?

Our tins and jars can totally be repurposed!

When roughly 1/4-1/2 inch (6-12 mm) of unmelted wax remains, discontinue using your candle and place it in the freezer. Once the wax has hardened, the wax and wick can be chipped out.

Alternatively you can boil about 1 inch of water in a pot on the stove and once boiled, turn the burner down to the lowest setting. Then place the container in the boiled water (don't let water get inside the vessel if possible) and let the remaining wax melt slowly.
Once the wax has melted, pour it out into a trash bin and then wipe out any remaining wax and the wick with a paper towel. Finish off by washing the container in very hot, soapy water. Rubbing alcohol can be used to remove any leftover wax residue.

Dispose of the hard or liquid wax in a trash bin. DO NOT POUR ANY WAX DOWN YOUR DRAIN!

Caution: The container will be very hot! Please wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the boiling water or hot melted wax!

DO YOU HAVE A CONTAINER RECYCLING PROGRAM?

Absolutely! Return your clean tin or jar (with the lid) + the wooden wick tab and receive $1 off your next candle purchase!

1 container = $1 off

Please note: empty tealight cups cannot be reused but they are recyclable.

Container returns are only accepted at our local pickup location, our delivery drop-offs and any markets we're attending. Empty tins and jars shipped back to us via Canada Post or other delivery services are not eligible for the recycling program at this time.

WHOLESALE, CUSTOM ORDERS & COLLABS

CAN YOU MAKE A CUSTOM CANDLE FOR MY BRAND OR EVENT?

As a new business, we are focused on our LUHO candle range and do not have immediate plans right now to offer custom scents/pieces.

Please note: we also do not offer custom labels for existing LUHO scents.

I HAVE A SHOP. CAN I WHOLESALE YOUR LINE?

As a new business and small home studio, each LUHO candle is made by hand. As such, we are only able to offer so many pieces and are unable to offer our candles to everyone that is interested. We’re open to new wholesale opportunities that we deem a good brand fit. We reserve the right to turn down any opportunities that we feel may not be in the best interest of our brand.

We prefer to limit the number of stockist partners per retail market to ensure fairness of existing shops carrying our range.

WILL YOU DONATE A PRIZE TO MY SOCIAL OR FUNDRAISER?

While we appreciate you thinking of us, we are unable to fulfill requests for social prizes, individual support, religious organizations, individuals raising funds for non-profit organizations, political organizations, etc.

It is unsustainable for us to offer our products to everyone who asks. Asking for free products from a small, independent business is not “supporting local.”

DO YOU WORK WITH INFLUENCERS? CAN I SEND YOU MY STATS?

No we do not.

We want customers to discover and enjoy our candles without being told to do so by someone who is receiving a monetary compensation or product in exchange for a post, story, tag or like.

We want to be as authentic as possible and let the quality of our range speak for itself!
